Current Activities
Our current trainees Xue Han and Jing Wang started their training on December of 2009 and will continue until the end of February of 2010. Since half of their training time falls into the holiday season, they could not attend the UC Berkeley classes. Our focus for them is to participant in meetings and seminars either on our Richmond campus (the California Department of Public Health), or on other San Francisco Bay Area locations, as well as Sacramento.
On Wednesday Jan 20th, 2010, Dr. Daniel Smith led the first case study 'Influenza A (H5N1) in Humans: Surveillance System Enhancement'. Dr. Smith has taught our previous trainees epidemiology cases, data analysis and the related statistical software applications.
Dr. Rick Kreutzer meets with Xue Han, Jing Wang and Lixia Zhang weekly to discuss the trainees' activities, check on their progresses, help with their summary activity reports and technical paper writing. Dr. Kreutzer also gives the trainees lectures on the US government, the California State government, the legislative processes, and the budget process.
Trainees Xue Han and Jing Wang have attended the regular Emergency Preparedness meetings held on our Richmond Campus; had met our health educator Ian Walker to discuss about basic approaches of health education, how to work with other agencies and tools to improve evaluation. Below are some short activity reports from Xue Han and Jing Wang.

English Proficiency Training is also a focus of our training plans. Our trainees work closely with the staffs in Environmental Health Investigations Branch, they have chances to talk in English with co-works. On Sundays, both Xue and Jing go to the Berkeley First Presbyterian Church to attend the English/Culture class. They are encouraged to attend the Berkeley or Albany Adult School to study English. We also provide private English lessons for them if they need.
Our training program also support the culture exchange activities for our trainees in order to help them understand the American culture. On Sunday January 10th, 2010, our program coordinator Lixia Zhang took Ms. Xue Han and Ms Jing Wang to Point Isabel; Berkeley Marina, Emeryville, and other local parks. Up coming plans are: visit Angel Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir woods, Muir Beach, Point Lobos in Monterey, Sacramento, Napa Valley etc. Please visit Current Trainee Event Photos and enjoy the beautiful pictures .
