California - China Environmental Health Training Program

 

 

           Current Activities                   

  • Attend  UC Berkeley classes, Meetings and Workshops

       Zhihai Jiang and Dasheng Lu are currently studying and working with the California Public Health Department.  Their

       training will be from December 1, 2010 to May 30, 2011.  Dasheng is working with Frank Barley, and Jianwen She 

       in the Environmental Health Laboratory and Zhihai is working with the Environmental Health Investigations Branch. 

       They are looking for appropriate courses in University of California at Berkeley for the spring semester.

       Dasheng and Zhihai are also actively participating meetings/conferences, workshops and seminars either on the Public

       Health Department Richmond campus where they have their work stations, or on other locations inside/outside of

       California. The first workshop they attended was in Oakland on December 17, 2010 called SAG (Stakeholder

       Advisory Group) meeting which was held by our Fish Project staffs.

  • Case Study

       Like the previous trainees, Zhihai and Dasheng will study the CDC epidemiology cases with Dr. Daniel Smith.  There

       are around 10 epidemiology cases available for them.  Zhihai and Dasheng also have opportunity to work with Dr.

       Smith to do data analysis on the project they brought from China.   

  • Weekly Meetings                                                                              

       Dr. Rick Kreutzer and Lixia Zhang meet with our trainees weekly to discuss the training activities, check on their

       progresses, help with their summary activity reports and technical paper writing.  Dr. Kreutzer also gives the trainees

       lectures on the US government, the California State government, the legislative processes, and the budget process.

  • English Learning                                        

       English Proficiency Training is also a focus of our training plans. Our trainees work closely with the staffs in

       Environmental Health Investigations Branch, they have chances to talk in English with co-works.  On Sundays,  both

       our trainees go to the Berkeley First Presbyterian Church to attend the English/Culture class. They also take English

       classes in Albany Adult School.  We provide them private English tutors if they need.

  • Culture Exchange                         

       Our training program also support the culture exchange activities for our trainees in order to help them understand the

       American culture.  Our training program schedule them to visit Napa Valley Wineries, Calistoga Petrified Forest, San

       Francisco China Town, the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Muir Beach, Point Reyes National Seashore, Point 

       Lobos State Park, Mont Tamalpais State Park, and Yosemite National Park,etc.
