  1st Shanghai - California Conference on Environmental Health  

 

April 6-10, 2004;    Hope Hotel    Shanghai China

 

The official name of the conference is "the 3rd International Academic Conference on Environmental and Occupational Medicine". Since it was the first time the California Department of Public Health - Environmental Health Investigations Branch (CDPH - EHIB) as a sponsor along with Shanghai CDC organized the conference it is also called "the 1st Shanghai-California Conference on Environmental Health". The speakers were from Fu Dan University and several governmental agencies (i.e., CDPH - EHIB, Shanghai Center for Disease Control, and United States Environmental Protection Agency).  In addition to technical activities, conference participants also engaged in various cultural and social activities (e.g., day trips to Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc.)

2nd Shanghai - California Conference on Environmental Health 

 

October 16-19, 2006;   Kunming Hotel,  Kunming,  Yunnan Province,  China

 

This was the 2nd California-Shanghai CDC Conference on Environmental Health (also The 4th International Academic Conference on Environmental & Occupational Medicine). Except CDPH - EHIB and Shanghai CDC, Kunming Medical College (KMC), School of Public Health (SPH) was one of the major sponsors for the conference.  Dr. Ping Liu - dean of SPH, KMC invited more than 20 speakers from countries outside of China such as the USA, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia Japan, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan etc.  There were many speakers from major Chinese universities, research institutes.  Around 200 people attended the conference.  The topics covered a broad range of environmental and occupational health.

                        The Concept & Practice of Molecular Epidemiology in Public Health 

 

November 12-15, 2008;    Hope Hotel,  Shanghai,  China

 

Our Fogarty International Training program held the first workshop -- The Concept & Practice of Molecular Epidemiology in Public Health in the end of 2008.  The participants were from universities, research institutes in the Yangzi River triangle, the east part of China.  Faculties are world famous professors from the United States and the Great Brittan.  The goal of this workshop is to provide training on large scale molecular epidemiology studies and establishment of bio-specimen repositories.

                        The 5th International Conference on Environmental Occupational Medicine

 

April 7-10, 2010    Howard Johnson Hotel,  Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, China

 

April 7-10, 2010, California Fogarty International Training Program, Shanghai CDC, Dujiangyan City Health Bureau worked together held the 5th International Academic Conference on Environmental Occupational Medicine.  Around 150 public professionals from all over China participated the conference and about 15 well know professors, researchers from the United States, Japan, Australia gave presentations on both plenary and sub-plenary sessions.  The conference was very successful, especially that the topic of lead poisoning and control was brought up to China's national conference level for the first time.  This could be a good start of lead prevention and control in China.

                                      The China-US City & Health Academic Activity

 

April 11-13, 2010       Gansu International Hotel,  Lanzhou,  Gansu Province, China

 

Right after the 5th ICEOM Dujiangyan conference, Drs. Rick Kreutzer, John Petterson and Vikrant Sood flew to Lanzhou to participate the China-US City & Health Academic Activity held in Gansu International Hotel.  Our previous trainee Guowei Yu represented the North Western Environmental Health Institute organized the event.  The audiences were from different departments of Lanzhou city including the North Western University for Nationalities, Lanzhou/Gansu Public Health Departments, and Lanzhou City Planning Department.  Except the three speakers from the United States, there were few Chinese speakers too.  After the presentations, the Lanzhou city planning experts showed the American experts their work, visited their newly completed wetland park.  Dr. Guowei Yu also showed us the two campus of her North Western University for Nationalities.  After the Lanzhou visit, Rick, John and Lixia flew to Shanghai, had a meeting with Shanghai CDC, met many of our previous trainees.  Please enjoy the activity photos.

         The China-US Environmental Impact Assessment & Health Impact Assessment Workshop

 

October 9-11, 2011       Xi Hu Yin Feng Hotel,  Lanzhou,  Gansu Province, China

 

California Fogarty International Training Program, and the China Northwest University for Nationalities together held the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Health Impact Assessment (HIA) workshop in Lanzhou on October 9-11, 2011.  The trainers were Dr. Kim-Chi T. Hoang of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Dr. Edmund Seto of the School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley (UCB). Dr. Lixia Zhang and Dr. Guowei Yu were in class translators for the training.

 Dr. Kim-Chi Hoang delivered the following contents to the workshop: The history of USEPA; The regulatory framework and the fundamentals of USEPA risk assessment and risk management practices; Chemical registration and chemical risk assessment; Air and water risk assessment; Super fund sites risk assessment; and risk communication etc.  Dr. Edmund Seto's training was focused on health impact assessment method, evaluation and health impact case studies such as Transportation Related Health Impact in Shanghai, China; Land Use Health Impact in Oakland, California; Climate Change Mitigation and Its Health Impact.  He also talked about the necessary education for moving towards HIA institutionalization.

Participants were from WHO, China Academy of Science, China CDC, Shanghai CDC, and Sichuan,Yunnan and Guangdong CDCs, Chinese Association of Environmental Science, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Lanzhou University, Qinghai University and the Northwest University for Nationalities . The workshop has a big impact on China's environment protection policy making, pollution control, as well as environmental related researches.
