California - China Environmental Health Training Program

 

 

           Xiaoheng Wang & Wangxi Hai Activities                   

  • Attend  UC Berkeley classes, Meetings and Workshops

       Xiaoheng Wang and Wangxi Hai are conducting their trainings with the California Public Health Department from

       March 15, 2010 to September 15, 2010.  They took the University of California Berkeley summer

       session epidemiology classes; in the mean time they were actively participating meetings/conferences, workshops        

       and seminars either on the Public Health Department Richmond campus where they have their work stations, or on 

       other locations inside/outside of California.  On May from 12-15, 2010, Xiaoheng and Wangxi attended the annual

       WREN (Western Region Epidemiology Network) conference in Ashland, Oregon and on June 6-10 they attended

       the CSTE (the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists Annual Conference) in Portland, Oregon.

  • Case Study

       Like the previous trainees, Xiaoheng and Wangxi study the CDC epidemiology cases with Dr. Daniel Smith.  During

       theire 6 months training they have studied influenza A (H5N1) in Humans: Surveillance System Enhancement'; 'Vinyl

       Chloride and Cancer'; they also worked with Dr. Smith to do data analysis on the project they brought from China.  

 

       

  • Weekly Meetings                                                                              

       Dr. Rick Kreutzer and Lixia Zhang meet with our trainees weekly to discuss the training activities, check on their

       progresses, help with their summary activity reports and technical paper writing.  Dr. Kreutzer also gives the trainees

       lectures on the US government, the California State government, the legislative processes, and the budget process.

  • English Learning                                        

       English Proficiency Training is also a focus of our training plans. Our trainees work closely with the staffs in

       Environmental Health Investigations Branch, they have chances to talk in English with co-works.  On Sundays,  both

       Xiaoheng and Wangxi go to the Berkeley First Presbyterian Church to attend the English/Culture class. They also

       took advanced English classes in Albany Adult School Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00am to 12 noon

       each week;  We also provided them a English tutor to have person to person conversations.

  • Culture Exchange                         

       Our training program also support the culture exchange activities for our trainees in order to help them understand the

       American culture.  Our trainees have visited Napa Valley Wineries, Calistoga Petrified Forest, San Francisco China

       Town, Ashland, Mont Shasta, Muir Woods, Point Reyes National Seashore, the Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite

       National Park, the Devil's Post Pile in Mammoth Lake, Mono Lake and Bodie --  the Ghost Town.  They also hiked

       6 miles in Mont Tamalpais State Park, that was the first and longest hiking trip in their lives.
