           Chunfeng & Xunjun Activities  

                  

                            

  1.  Taking classes at School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley.  Trainees Chunfeng Wu and Xunjun

       Hu have selected the below courses for the 2009 Fall semester: 1). Public Health Preparedness & Emergency   

       Response; 2). Outbreak Investigation; 3). Epidemiology Methods 1&2; 4). Health Risk Assessment, Regulation &

       Policy etc.

 

  2.  Case Study with Daniel Smith:  Dr. Smith leads the study of the CDC Epidemiological Cases such as 'Injury

       Surveillance'; 'Cigarette Smoking and Lung Cancer'; 'An Outbreak of a Neurological Syndrome Among Factory

       Workers'; 'A Mixed Bag in Michigan'; 'Influenza A (H5N1) in Humans: Surveillance System Enhancement' etc.  Dr. 

       Smith has taught our previous trainees the same case studies, and for the new group there are new materials  

       available.  Dr. Smith also teaches our trainees statistical analysis and the related software applications.

                         

                                                   

   

  3.  Dr. Rick Kreutzer meets with Chunfeng Wu, Xunjun Hu and Lixia Zhang weekly to discuss  the trainees' activities,

       check on their progresses, help with their technical paper writing.  Dr. Kreutzer also gives the trainees lectures on the

       US government, the California State government, the legislative processes, and the budget process.

 

    

 

 4.   Chunfeng Wu and Xunjun Hu are fully engaged in attending presentations, seminars and meetings on the DHS

        Richmond campus, Sacramento, and University of California at Berkeley, etc.  On June 15-16, both our trainees

        attended the 'Healthy Housing Symposium' in San Francisco.  They have learned a lot from the conference.  Trainees

        are also required to write reports on interesting activities they participated; and a Weekly Report summarizing their

        activities during the week.  Trainees also have to finish a technical paper before the 6-months training ends.  This is

        designed on the purpose of improving their English writing skills.

      Xunjun Hu Final Paper:  

                     Evidence-based review on the effectiveness of interventions for  the control and

                     prevention of SARS and other respiratory pathogens in health care workers            

 

       Chunfeng Wu Final Paper: 

                     Application of Biomonitoring in Risk Assessment

 

  5.  English Proficiency Training:  Our trainees work closely with the staffs in Environmental Health Investigations

       Branch, they have chances to talk in English with co-works.  On Sundays,  both Chunfeng and Xunjun go to the

       Berkeley First Presbyterian Church to attend the English/Culture class.  On June 14th  2009, Lixia took them to this

       class the first time.  The topic of the class was 'American Baseball', and our trainees learned the history of American

       Baseball, and how to watch the game. Both Chunfeng and Xunjun are also attending the Albany Adult School English

       classes in the evenings to improve their listening and speaking skills.  We also provide private English lessons for them

       if they need.    

                      

  6.  Culture Exchange Activities:

       Our program also support the culture exchange activities for our trainees in order to help them understand the  

       American culture. Sunday June 21, 2009, Lixia drove them to Brentwood to pick up apricots, Nectarines, Cherries, it

       was very fun. On the July 4th holiday, Xunjun and Chunfeng spend the day with Lixia's family, watched the      

       Wimbledon men's finals, had lunch together and then visited the local parks.  They both had a good time.  On

       Sunday July 12th, Lixia took them to the Angle Island; visited the newly opened Immigration Station, hiked the 5 mile

       Island perimeter of  etc. They have also visited the Muir Woods, the Muir Beach, Point Reyes, Treasure Island and

       the Golden Gate Bridge.  Oct 2-3, Drs. Wu and Hu went to Yosemite National Park with Lixia's family, they did

       hiking, camping, and enjoyed the beauty of mother nature. They also visited Chabot Space Center in Oakland, and
