California - China Environmental Health Training Program

 

 

           Ye Lu and Xi Zhang Activities  

                  

                            

  1.  Taking classes at School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley.  For the spring semester of 2008, our  

       scholars Xi Zhang and Ye Lu are attending the Professional Development Workshop Series, sponsored by: 

       Pacific Public Health Training Center (PPHTC);  The workshop is on Tuesdays, 4-6pm.  Some topics of the

       workshops are: 1). Knowing Your Management Style;  2). Introduction to Finance and Budgeting I, II and III.

       3). How to Improve Your Presentation Skills etc.

 

  2.  Case Study with Daniel Smith:  Dr. Smith teaches our trainees the CDC Epidemiology Cases such as 'Injury

       Surveillance'; 'Cigarette Smoking and Lung Cancer'; 'An Outbreak of a Neurological Syndrome Among Factory

       Workers'; etc.  Dr. Smith has taught our previous trainees in the past.  For the current group, we also have new

        teaching materialse available.  Except the CDC case study, Dr. Smith also teaches statistical analysis and the related

        software applications.

       

 

  3.  Dr. Rick Kreutzer meets with Xi Zhang, Ye Lu and Lixia Zhang every other week on Monday 10-11:30am to discuss

       the trainees' activities, check on their progresses, help with their technical paper writing.  Dr. Kreutzer also gives the

       trainees lectures on the US government, the California State government, the legislative process, the budget process.

 

  4.  Ye Lu and Xi Zhang are very active attending presentations, seminars and meetings on the DHS Richmond campus,

       Sacramento, and University of California at Berkeley.  Our program also allows them 1-2 out of state trips to attend

       academic trainings/conferences.  Trainees are required to write Summary Reports on some interesting activities they

       participated; and a Weekly Report to summarize their activities during the week is another requirement.   Trainees

       also have to finish a technical paper before the 6-months training ends.  This is designed on the purpose of improving

       their English writing skills.

  5.  English Proficiency Training:  Our trainees work closely with the staffs in Environmental Health Investigations

       Branch, they have chances to talk in English with co-works.  On Sundays,  Xi and Ye go to the

       Berkeley First Presbyterian Church to attend the English/Culture class.  Like our previous trainees, they enjoy 

       learning both English and the American culture very much.  We also provide private English lessons if they need.    

                      

  6.  Culture Exchange Activities:

       Our program also support the culture exchange activities for our trainees in order to help them understand the  

       American culture. They have visited the city of San Francisco including China Town, Fish men's Warf, Union Square,

       etc; University of  California Berkeley Campus;  Stanford University; Sacramento;  On March 31,  2008, Lixia took

       Xi and Ye to Cross Country Ski in Royal Gorge;  Ye also visited Muir Woods National Monument with Lixia, Tom

       & Jane Kelley; May 14-18, Xi and Ye attended the WREN conference in Ashland, Oregon.  After the meeting they

       visited Oregon Caves National Monument, The Redwood National Parks, and the California coast; June - August,   

       Dr. Harvey Kayman and Lixia Zhang took Ye Lu and Xi Zhang to Napa Valley visited 5 beautiful wineries; walked 

       in the beautiful Piedmont area - one of the rich cities in the United States;  Our trainees also enjoyed the Lake Chabot,
